Enhancing Efficiency through Standardized Telemetry Data Management

The real-time telemetry management solution was launched to address the growing challenges of handling vast amounts of telemetry data in increasingly connected environments. The system demonstrated its ability to efficiently process critical data points such as GPS coordinates, temperature, and humidity.

A key challenge in the integration phase was incorporating multiple carrier data sources while ensuring scalability, resilience, and high performance. The organization standardized data intake processes to streamline operations, enabling seamless accessibility across all departments. This transformation significantly improved tracking and transport order management, unlocking new levels of efficiency and innovation.

Deploying this robust solution enhanced operational visibility, empowered datadriven decision-making, and optimized logistics. Service reliability improved, setting a new benchmark for performance and operational excellence.

The telemetry-enabled logistics platform

Project

The telemetry-enabled logistics platform was established to provide data-driven insights into transportation operations. This involves maintaining a clear and ongoing understanding of transport movements as they occur, along with the conditions surrounding them, such as temperature. This capability facilitates proactive decision-making and enhances operational efficiency.

To achieve this, the organization integrates transportation processes with connected devices and various data sources that deliver real-time telemetry data. The long-term goal is to achieve nearly 100% coverage of all transports with telemetry-enabled devices, ensuring a seamless tracking experience throughout the entire logistics network.

Tech stack

Java 21, Spring Boot, Kafka, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, InfluxDB, Kubernetes, AWS

Task

  • Integrate carriers’ telemetry devices with transportation management systems to enhance real-time monitoring.
  • Collect internal telemetry data from the fleet management application, managed through the telemetry data platform.
  • Enable real-time tracking of GPS coordinates, temperature, humidity, vibration, battery levels, and fuel consumption once a transport is linked to a telemetry device.
  • Provide telemetry data to generate accurate arrival predictions based on real-time conditions.
  • Enable seamless data access across internal applications and reports to improve operational visibility.

Realization

  • Providing tools for carriers that enable them to transmit their telemetry data to the platform with minimal involvement from internal teams (known as self-on-boarding).
  • Ensuring system stability in the context of monitored telemetry devices and the telemetry data itself.
  • Making collected data available to internal subsystems through various channels, such as Kafka, Data Mart, and reports.
  • Ensuring the best method for data collection, storage, and accessibility, as demonstrated by the implementation of InfluxDB technology.
  • Achieving real-time visibility, ensuring comprehensive tracking of all shipments, whether handled directly or through partner carriers.
  • Handling crucial system integrations with major clients.

Team

j-labs has collaborated with the organization since 2019, providing highly skilled engineers and ensuring top-quality services. The telemetry platform team consists of ten specialists, including four from j‑labs, contributing to the project’s development and stability.

To enhance efficiency, the team is divided into two specialized groups: Data Integration and System Operations. The Data Integration group focuses on integrating telemetry device APIs and transforming data into the organization’s internal model. The System Operations group ensures system stability, secures incoming data, and manages traffic for reliable real-time visibility.

The telemetry platform team includes the following specialists from j‑labs:

  • 1 Technical Leader,
  • 1 Senior Engineer (System Operations group),
  • 2 Engineers (Data Integration group.

Transport Visibility Platform

Project

The Transport Visibility Platform connects transport operations with logistics data by processing transport details, schedules, and telemetry inputs such as GPS, temperature, and vibrations. It delivers key insights, including ETA calculations, location-based notifications, anomaly detection, and shipment visualization on a map.

Serving both internal teams and external customers, it enhances logistics planning, delay management, and real-time shipment tracking. Customers using additional tracking devices gain greater visibility and instant alerts on critical transport conditions, ensuring better control over their shipments.

Tech stack

Java 21, Spring Boot, Postgres, DynamoDB, AWS, Kafka/Kafka Streams, Kubernetes, Junit5, DDD

Task

  • Create and manage Transport Orders and Tours, ensuring efficient tracking and execution.
  • Provide real-time insights into the location and progress of Transport Orders and Tours.
  • Monitor Transport Order and Tour statuses, ensuring accurate updates and timely interventions.
  • Collect advanced logistics data, such as precise delivery ETA based on telemetry inputs.
  • Integrate with location providers for terminals and delivery addresses to streamline and optimize logistics operations.
  • Notify consumers of critical delivery events, leveraging real-time transport and telemetry data.
  • Manage and execute notification patterns, ensuring timely and relevant alerts for stakeholders.
  • Develop and optimize the UI for seamless Transport Order and Tour management.

Realization

  • Analyzing requirements to enhance visibility and monitoring capabilities.
  • Developing a new Shipment Model aligned with business needs.
  • Ensuring unification and accessibility of the new Shipment Model across systems.
  • Processing telemetry events for extended use cases and improved tracking.
  • Providing real-time status monitoring for Transport Orders and Tours.
  • Implementing extended Real-Time Visibility (RTV) for transports.
  • Enabling API access to the new Shipment Model for seamless integration.
  • Managing alerting templates to deliver relevant event notifications to clients.
  • Exposing advanced Transport Order and Tour telemetry for enhanced tracking insights.
